Welcome to the eighth episode of the Career Crowd Podcast where we have an interesting and thought provoking conversation with Kate Lucey.  We talk to Kate about the topic of mental health in the workplace and she shares her positive and negative experiences of mental heath and what we can learn from her book, Get a Grip Love.

Mental Health represents many different types of feelings and behaviors. We hear about stress and anxiety a lot but there are also other disorders such as ADHD and Schizophrenia. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:

  • Biological factors, such as genetics or brain chemistry
  • Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse

And even family history of mental health problems.

So why is this important for your career? Well we spend a 1/3 of our lifetime working and it is significantly important to understand how this impacts our mental health in the workplace. Also, with the impact of COVID 19 how has the pandemic and the fallout exacerbated the issue. According to mentalhealth.org - A staggering 70 million workdays are lost each year due to mental health problems in the UK, costing employers approximately £2.4 billion per year. So, there is a personal cost to people’s wellbeing but also to employer’s operating costs.

We also have another Career Fear segment lined up which will be focused on the fear of burnout, and how this state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress can impact your career.
